8 Favorite Netflix Shows for Toddlers

With a new baby here, having an arsenal of quality shows that my toddler can watch is so important. We don’t have cable, so relying on other services is important. Netflix is full of TV and movie options for kids, but knowing which ones are actually worth watching is hard. So here’s a list of our favorite Netflix shows for toddlers!

A round up of the best shows on Netflix for Toddlers

Daniel Tiger | This series is by far the MOST watched show for our house. If you haven’t watched it, it’s based on Mister Roger’s Neighborhood’s Land of Make Believe. Prepare for some warm squishy feelings remembering yourself as a kid watching Mister Roger’s! Daniel Tiger is full of great episodes teaching amazing little lessons on the best way to react to situations. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve referred back to a Daniel Tiger episode to talk about something. (Note: July 2016 Netflix removed Daniel Tiger… but you can still find all the episodes on Amazon Prime or PBS Kids)

Super Why | My toddler started watching this PBS show on a whim because she was in to Super Heroes. At the time, I wasn’t actively teaching her letters or phonics. Then, all of the sudden, she started recognizing letters on books, signs and toys! Turns out she was absorbing more from Super Why than I realized. It’s a cute show to watch together and sound out letters and read words. Check it out!

Sofia the First | If you have a wannabe princess in your house, definitely cue this up! Sofia is a princess, but isn’t super girly. She’s adventurous and kind. There are a few episodes we skip because they’re too “scary” or heavier on magic… but overall it’s a cute little show full of Disney-style show tunes!

Puffin Rock | This is such a charming little cartoon! It features Puffins (obviously) but other animals too. The episodes mainly feature little adventures or fun with fellow animals on the Puffin Rock Island. They also all have Irish accents, and it’s adorable. I’ve also learned my kiddo learned about other ocean animals, a super moon (one of the episodes), and about nocturnal vs. diurnal animals.

Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood | Netflix has a collection of old classics and they are absolutely delightful! My toddler always comments that “he is so kind, momma”. And he is! I mean, who doesn’t love a classic Mr. Roger’s episode? (Note: July 2016 Netflix removed Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood as well… but you can still find all the episodes on Amazon Prime or PBS Kids)

The Hungry Caterpillar & Other Stories | This is a short, 30 minute video collection of various Eric Carle stories. The animations are true to the illustrations of the books. It’s a great jumping off point if you want to combine book reading and a craft together. It’s also short and sweet – so if you need your toddler to watch something for 30 minutes, but don’t want to fall into the trap of a show instantly queuing up after it finishes, this is your thing!

Kipper The Dog | There are quite a few 45 minute “movies” or compilations of Kipper on Netflix, and we adore all of them. The show is based on books, and they are all just easy going, age appropriate stories. We didn’t encounter any that were too intense or scary. They aren’t necessarily educational stories, BUT they are just sweet.

Leap Frog | Just search “Leap Frog” on Netflix and you’ll find quite a few shows to choose from! They are all educational, focusing on letters, numbers or simple math concepts. The letter and number ones are perfect for my toddler, but the math ones are a bit over her head (better for preschooler ages). But if you’re wanting to incorporate a teaching video into your routine, these are great.

A few other Honorable Mentions that we like but aren’t obsessed with yet…

The Angelina Ballerina shows are just a touch too old for my toddler, but she still loves them. Some of the stories feature characters that are a bit too sassy or do naughty things without much consequence… hence why I think my toddler is still a bit too young for most of the episodes. But there are a few winners!

Netflix also puts together Compilation Shows with short episodes from Barney, Bob the Builder, Angelina Ballerina and more. They are all around a particular theme (Fall, Winter, Farm, etc). It’s fun to get some consistency in theme but with a variety of shows.

What are some of your favorite go to Netflix shows for your toddler or preschooler? Share them!

Puffin Rock is so cute! I just love the animation as does my three year old. He also loves Dragon Tales. It was popular when my kid brother was little so I have to giggle when I hear the theme song come on because it takes me back! Now, I need to get some shows together for my soon to be nine year old!

Isn’t Puffin Rock adorable?? It’s a show I actually excited to watch. 🙂 I forgot about Dragon Tales! We may need to add that one to our list now.

Hahaha there are a few episodes I really like! And I get such a chuckle over the fact that Balleywick’s voice is Tim Gunn. There’s even an episode where he says “make it work!” Haha!

GREAT list!! We’re in 100% agreement on Daniel Tiger, Sofia and Super Why. Olive also loves Sheriff Callie’s Wild West, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Curious George. It’s been a lifesaver to have cute, educational programs for her to watch as we’ve transitioned to life with two kids. She’s happy, learning and playing so that makes me happy. We also reference Daniel Tiger often. I can’t convince her to watch the classic Mr. Rogers, but I’m a big fan of those 🙂

We haven’t seen Sheriff Callie! Adding that to the list! And Elizabeth has developed a love for Mickey and Minnie despite not having seen any shows! So she may love clubhouse haha! We were JUST getting into Curious George before they took all the episodes off of Netflix. The PBS kids app doesn’t refresh episodes very often so she’s been missing out on that. But SuperWhy. I swear Elizabeth knows her letters and sounds thanks to that show. Haha!
