High Five for Friday #51 | A New Year!

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by me, TifDella, and Caitlin! If you want to know more, read about it here!

Some Housekeeping! We’ll be all back to normal next week with a featured blogger. We weren’t sure how many would join us today, so thought it was best to save the featured blogger shout out for a day when we have our usual numbers. Also, keep your eyes out next week for a new link up tool. Still easy to use, but a new look! Get those nice thumbnail pictures ready.

Second, our next H54F Hangout will be January 14! Mark your calendars now. Can’t wait to hang with you all!

I’ve missed you all over the last few weeks, but shoot! I really have loved our Christmas break. It was glorious. But I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things next week. And I can’t wait to hear how your holidays went!

Here’s what I’ve been up to!

In the week leading up to Christmas, I tried my best to sneak in some family fun! My husband was off that week, and he so rarely has time completely off, so we wanted to make the most of it. One highlight was hitting the Hillsborough Riverwalk. It’s this lovely paved path along a large river, through the woods. We chose to walk a half mile section that took us from the cute downtown to a playground. We had a blast and can’t wait to go back!

Play time at the park!

Christmas Eve was so busy. In hindsight, I wish I hadn’t crammed so much in. The morning was spent cleaning and packing to go out of town. Then we squeezed in dinner before a 5PM Christmas Eve service. Then it was hustle home for present opening and stocking hanging.

Eating Christmas Eve Dinner

We had tamales, black beans and rice for Christmas Eve dinner, which gave someone a messy face.

A favorite present

One of Elizabeth’s favorite presents was a doll cradle. She is such a little mommy!

Enjoying her new art easel

She also hasn’t stopped using her new art easel! It will be a source for fun for a long time.

Hanging the stocking

Hanging the stocking was also tons of fun this year, because Elizabeth could actually reach the hook! And in our house, at least for now, Santa only brings gifts for the stocking, not the whole present load. (I’d like some credit for all the present buying and wrapping!)

Christmas morning wasn’t as rushed as I thought it would be. We had a yummy breakfast of the Pioneer Woman’s Baked French Toast Casserole, and then we loaded the car to head up to my in-laws home for a few days. We made it up there in time for lunch and we just had a delightful time!

Presents at the Inlaws

It’s fair to say that after presents from everyone, Elizabeth has become a present opening expert!

Christmas at the beach!

It was so strange for this midwest girl, but it was warm and sunny enough while up at Virginia Beach that we went to the beach for the afternoon! Elizabeth splashed around in the surf and sand with her granddaddy and daddy, while nana and I rocked in rocking chairs, taking in the sea breeze. It was weird, but lovely! Elizabeth, in this picture, was completely soaked, and covered in sand. She had a blast!

But Christmas was a tad intense and tiring for our little girl. She was zonked on the drive back home!

My family flew down Monday and just left yesterday. It was so much fun having all this family time! It rained the ENTIRE time my family was here in NC… so we didn’t really leave the house, but that suited Grandma and Grandpa just fine 🙂 Plenty of play time with Elizabeth!

We also had something really exciting happen this week, BUT I’m saving that for next week on the blog. Stay tuned!

As much fun as we had over Christmas, I’m really looking forward to getting back into the routine. And catching up with friends! I’m so used to seeing friends and having play dates during the week that going a few weeks without the usual hangouts is strange!

I also plan on keeping ALL of our Christmas decorations up until at least the 6th. That’s just the way it will be.

Can’t wait to hear what you were up to this Christmas!! And what’s your first To Do for the New Year? Let me know!

A Child is Born

Merry Christmas!

For unto us a child is born,
unto us a son is given:
and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called
Wonderful,
Counselor,
the Mighty God,
the Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

I hope you and your loved ones are having a glorious Christmas!

High Five for Friday is taking a break today, but we’ll be back January 1 for a recapalooza!!

The Annual Christmas Card | The Non-Professional Version

Someone pinch me! There are only 2 days until Christmas!! This morning I woke up really excited. As of yesterday, I’ve been anxious and frazzled about getting all my favorite Christmas traditions done, but this morning? Feeling super festive!

I realized I haven’t shared our Christmas card photos yet! This was our best Christmas card to date, and I’m pretty pleased with it.

We didn’t do a fancy family photo shoot (we have yet to do professional pictures… our last set of those was for our wedding day, 8 years ago!). For our annual Christmas card, we usually opt to do a collection of photos from our adventures during the year. This year, I wanted to try our hand at taking our own family photo.

The day we chose to do it was a day where we were all sick!! In hindsight, not the best idea, but we decided if we didn’t do it then, it would never happen.

We opted to snap some family photos in our backyard and take advantage of our woods. We hauled out the camera and tripod, and my handy husband played around with angles and lighting. But that’s about as exciting as we got! We stood in front of the camera and had a wireless remote to take the photos and said “CHEESE!”.

After about 30 minutes of snapping, we finally had this!

Taking your own family Christmas card photos!

Hey! We were all looking at the camera, eyes open, and sort of smiling! A WINNER!

Now, it was a struggle to get that… our morning really felt like this…

Taking your own family Christmas card photos!

But the goal is always to get just one decent picture! That’s all that matters!

That afternoon, feeling a little better after some naps, we headed to Duke Gardens for some exploring and a family picnic. Tons of fun! We brought our nifty camera just for fun. While we were there, we snapped a ton of fun pictures! And quickly realized that we were giving ourselves some additional pictures for the Christmas card! It looked like we had done a semi-professional, organized photo shoot, when in reality we were just having fun.

So huzzah! You don’t have to do a professional photo shoot! Just a little coordination on your part, and you can cobble together a pretty cute Christmas card!

*I’d show you the final card… but you know… some things have to stay in the family 😉

High Five for Friday #50 | Christmas Traditions

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by me, TifDella, and Caitlin! If you want to know more, read about it here!

Some Housekeeping! First, there will be NO link up next week – Christmas Day. Enjoy that day with family and friends, please! We’ll all meet back up here on January 1 for a New Year’s celebration! I expect an extra big recap from everyone!

Second, our next H54F Hangout will be January 14! Mark your calendars now 😉

Our featured blogger this week is Tabitha from A Hundred Tiny Wishes! She’s joined me in the 30s club (hooray! welcome) with a birthday recently, but I really loved her post of lessons learned in her 20s. All truth! And she gathered the most delicious collection of Christmas cookies and treats! Swing over and say hello.

This week, instead of sharing some highlights, I’m sharing my top 5 favorite Christmas traditions, past and present! Can’t wait to check out yours too!

I’m such a traditions girl! I have such sweet, fun memories of all the traditions of my youth! And now that we have our own family, I am adamant about us being home on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, so we can start establishing our own traditions. Now that Elizabeth is a little older, she is super into the excitement of Christmas. I feel like NOW is the perfect time to get into our traditions.

  1. Christmas Cookies! I have always been the cookie lady in my family. My mom always said she lacked the patience for cookies, so she gladly passed the task off to me when I showed an interest. Ironically, I don’t make any special cookies for Christmas. Just standard favorites like chocolate chip, ginger snaps, oatmeal and then a wild card cookie (sometimes biscotti, sometimes peanut butter). We so rarely have cookies through the year that baking standard cookies at Christmas feels like a special treat! Next week my cookie baking begins! I plan on doing a batch of sugar cookies just so Elizabeth can help me cut and decorate.
  2. The Perfect Christmas Songs! My sister and I were tasked with setting up our tree every year, and for that set up, we always pulled out the Neil Diamond Christmas album (a cheesy classic that must be listened to!), and to this day, it’s my MUST LISTEN to music when I decorate the tree. If you’ve never heard this gem, allow me to indulge you!

On Christmas morning, my dad always cued up the Mannheim Steamroller cds for present opening. I can’t listen to a Mannheim song without imagining wrapping paper everywhere 🙂 But nowadays, I love any traditional Christmas carol sung by a choir OR those delightful songs from the 40s and 50s.
  3. Christmas Eve Oranges and Music! Christmas Eve is chucked full of tradition for me. For whatever reason, when we got a little older, my sister and I ate buckets of clementine oranges during the day of Christmas Eve. We also played car racing games… no doubt to keep out of my mom’s hair as she tried to finish loose ends.  I still eat buckets of oranges (in fact, my sister and I usually text each other our haul each year) and I might just race a car or two for old times sake. And then, the Christmas Eve Concert. When my sister and I were first learning piano, my dad requested on Christmas Eve that we play a few Christmas carols on the piano, and then he read the Christmas story from Luke. Every year after that, our “Christmas Eve Concerts” got more elaborate and planned. My sister and I would retreat to the office, computer on and Bibles out, planning our own version of Festivals and Carols – a mix of Bible texts and corresponding songs. We printed out programs. We practiced. We got serious about that. Even though Elizabeth isn’t playing instruments yet, I plan this year to start back up that tradition! She’ll grab her little maracas and recorder and we’ll sing songs. It will be a gas!
  4. Christmas Jammies! Anyone else do the Christmas Jammies? It was the only thing we were allowed to open on Christmas Eve. My parents never had festive gear. It was just my sister and me. And I’m happily carrying on this tradition now! In fact, this year I bought 2 pairs of festive jammies for Elizabeth. One set she started wearing December 1, and then another pair for opening on Christmas Eve. I can’t wait!
