High Five for Friday #63 | Happy Easter!

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by me, TifDella, and Caitlin! If you want to know more, read about it here!

If you’re new to High Five for Friday, welcome! We’re so happy you’re here! When you link up below, could you add a * after your name? That way we all know you’re here for the first time and can come say hello!

This week’s featured blogger is Stephanie from Stephanie Spring. One of her posts this week about the mix tape of her life had me thinking we were kindred spirits! (Point of Grace… N’Sync… Hanson… Adele… take me back!) Stephanie is a lifestyle blogger who loves to blog about the joys of life. Be sure to swing over and say hello!

It was quite the week for us!

1. I don’t want to jinx us, but by about Wednesday this week we seem to all be 100% cured from our plagues. Shoot – I’m even sleeping in our bed regularly now! My coughing was so bad there that I was sleeping on the couch (which was VERY comfortable, actually!). That was for about 2.5 weeks. So I’m back to the land of pillows and sheets. My husband is feeling much better, and Elizabeth is basically running on extra energy she had been saving up while she was sick. HA!

2. I realized we’ve been sick the ENTIRE month of March… gah! Crazy. Since this week felt a little more normal, I took the opportunity to work ahead on the blog and get some future posts done. I decided it’s been post-lite around here in general this month, so one more week of quiet won’t kill me. HA! So next week we’re back to the usual! Thanks for sticking around and being patient this month.

3. Big Girl Bed has been going well! We’re 1.5 weeks into this and so far, so good! She is AWESOME about sleeping in her bed at nap times, but at night time we’ve noticed she’s awake and hopping in and out of bed for at least an hour. Now, granted, when she was sleeping in her crib, she could have been awake for an hour! We think the problem in the night light we have in there. She didn’t have a night light before, but we worried about her trying to get out of bed in the dark. Unfortunately, I think the night light is just creating an opening to get up and stay awake. So Operation No Night Light begins this weekend. If you didn’t see last week’s vlog with the big girl bed reveal, watch now! (Or at least skip ahead to where Elizabeth sees her bed – so cute!)

4. We’ve had beautiful weather this week! A lot of time spent outdoors, running around. In fact, Wednesday we spent the morning at our favorite park for about 2 hours. We even had a picnic! I’m quickly realizing our lovely weather will soon be replaced by “hot and humid” weather… so we need to be outside as much as possible!

5.  I’m officially 30 weeks. Mercy! This pregnancy has gone by so fast! So far, so good in that department! I passed my glucola test last week, and other than just being tired, I have had a really great pregnancy. I’m noticing more Braxton Hicks this time around, which I didn’t notice with Elizabeth (maybe I didn’t know what to look for???), but this time they are fairly regular. With Elizabeth moving to her big girl room, we’ve been working on Baby Bruder’s room! The crib linens arrived this week, and my husband hung up the COOLEST metal vintage airplane! Elizabeth’s nursery didn’t look this awesome! Can’t wait to give you all a sneak peek soon.

Hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend! What special plans do you have? We’ll be headed up to the in-laws in mere hours for festive fun. This song has been my Easter theme song for the last few years.

He is Risen!

Using the Simplified Planner | Monthly, Weekly & Daily Planning

A guide on how to use the Simplified Planner Weekly Edition for monthly, weekly and daily planning.

I love all things planners, lists and staying organized! I may not be the most organized person, but I sure love to try new ways to keep life all together. I’ve gushed many times about my favorite planner – the Simplified Planner Weekly Edition – since I first got in back in August last year. It fits my need to have a planner to map out the months, weeks and days, but without a ton of extras and razzle dazzle.

When I’m choosing a new planner, or even a new system for keeping track of lists, I love to see examples of how others use a tool. I’m a visual person (or maybe a copy cat?) so getting sneak peeks at real life planning is helpful to me. So today’s post is all about that!

This has been about 6 months in the making… it took me that long to figure out the best system for using the Simplified Planner.  It was a bit of trial and error, but I’ve got it down to a science that works for me!

A guide on how to use the Simplified Planner Weekly Edition for monthly, weekly and daily planning.

The Tools

There are only a few things I need to help supplement planning with the Simplified Planner.

  • The Pen – I love the Pilot G2 rollerball pen ultra fine (0.38mm tip). It’s a great fine tip that doesn’t bleed through or smudge!
  • My phone – My husband and I keep a shared calendar on our phones for family events and appointments. He also keeps work tasks on there that will affect when we have dinner (late night work shifts, etc). This is especially helpful to refer to when I’m planning months and weeks.
  • Moleskine Volant – I’ve talked about this cheap little notebook before, but I love using this for list making and brainstorming. The Simplified Planner has almost zero space for planning/brain dumping, so this little notebook gives me a space for it. It keeps my chicken scratch out of my pretty planner.

Monthly Planning

I love long term planning! Any planner I own, whether it’s a DIY version or a structured planner, MUST have a monthly spread. It’s just so handy for visualizing what is going on for the coming months.

I’ve learned, though, that plans change… so I’ve now gotten into the habit of just planning one month at a time. All future appointments first go into our shared calendar on our phones. Then I will reference that when I begin my monthly planning process.

Here’s my process for Monthly Planning!

A guide on how to use the Simplified Planner Weekly Edition for monthly, weekly and daily planning.

I sit down to do a monthly plan about 1 week before the new month starts.

The first step is sitting down with my phone and writing in any recurring events that I know always happen, like my Bible Study group or Elizabeth’s school days.

I also write in any birthdays or special events.

Finally, I add in any appointments or family events I need to note, like kids birthday parties (so many of those!) or doctor appointments.

To keep things tidy, I don’t necessarily add the time that event is happening. Instead I write them in certain spots in that day’s box. For example, if it’s a morning appointment, I write it at the top of the box. An afternoon appointment goes in the middle, and an evening event goes at the bottom. It just visually gives me a clue as to when things are happening. I get more specific when I start my weekly plan.

Each monthly spread has a section for Notes. This is the only spot where I will “future plan” longer than one month out. I jot down goals I need to accomplish that month or even tasks that need addressed when that month rolls around. For example, in March I jotted down that I needed to look up when Spring Break was for Elizabeth’s school so I could plan accordingly.

Once that’s done, I’m ready to plan out my Week!

The Weekly Planning process is, for me, the longest of the three. There is more to sit down and write out than other steps.

I love sitting down on Sunday afternoons, with my planner and my phone, and sketching out what the coming week will look like. I write in appointments or activities, cleaning tasks to accomplish, my blog plan and my menu plan.

This is where I really spent time playing around with the process and layout of how I wanted to write things down. I tried several methods, and settled on this current one shortly after New Year. It’s really worked for me!

The Simplified Planner layout has 2 list sections. A lined section on the left, and then a bullet section on the right. I use the left side for the “nice to do” tasks and the right side for the “must do” tasks, which includes that menu planning box!

A guide on how to use the Simplified Planner Weekly Edition for monthly, weekly and daily planning.

When I sit down to plan the week, I first write in any appointments or events with a time stamp around it. That goes at the top of the left section, in chronological order (nerd alert!). I refer to my phone AND the monthly spread for this.

Next up comes my cleaning tasks for the week. I do the same tasks on each day, so it’s easy to write down. I might refer to the previous week to remind me of a few things, but in general, it’s all locked in my head.

I then jot down the blog post I have planned for each day in the last line of the right section. It’s just a visual reminder that if it’s not done yet, it needs to be!

Menu planning comes next. I look at what’s going on that week (husband working late?) and plan meals accordingly. I jot the plan AND where that recipe comes from (Pinterest or cookbook/page number) in each day’s handy little meal plan box. Once this is done I can also write my Menu Monday posts!

Finally, I jot down any tasks I know MUST get done. I don’t do too much here, though, as plans always change. I save any major list making for my daily planning step.

Once that’s all done, I feel like I really accomplished something that Sunday! HA!

Daily Planning

I try to sneak in a Daily Planning session the night before, right after I’ve got the toddler down for the night. It’s a fairly quick process, but I find that if I skip this step, my next day isn’t very productive!

First up is looking at what didn’t get done that day that I can try to do the next day. Depending on the urgency, I’ll write it in the “must do” or “nice to do” sections.

Then I write in any tasks that I know need to get done. Usually this involves some sort of blogging task – pictures to take, video to edit, etc.

Finally, if my day is looking a little light (HA!) I refer to my Moleskine Volant for any tasks I could sneak in. This usually involves some organizing project I’ve been putting off.

This whole process takes no more than 10 minutes. It’s really quite fast! If it took any longer I know it wouldn’t happen regularly. Who has time to plan daily longer than that??

I also created a video to walk you through everything!

So there you go! If you’re a nosey person like me, you’ve hopefully found this helpful. Even if you don’t have the Simplified Planner, you could easily adapt this process to any planner or notebook you’d like!

This week’s featured blogger is Katie from Preppy Empty Nester. True to the blog name, she and her husband are empty nesters in Massachusetts with two grown daughters and a dog named Chowder (or “Chowdah” if you’re from that neck of the woods). Swing over and say hello!!

We are all finally sort of, kind of on the mend. Elizabeth is 100% back to normal while I’m at about 90%. My poor husband appears to be back-tracking… but things are looking up!

Something exciting happened this week – Elizabeth FINALLY got in to her big girl bed! And the transition, so far, has been very smooth.

But it just felt like a good week to start back up the vlogs. I’m definitely rusty… but at least there is cute footage of Elizabeth seeing her bed for the first time AND a sneak peek at what her room is shaping up to look like.

And did you see yesterday’s post? It’s Tif’s 2nd Blogiversary and there’s a giveaway in celebration! Head on over here to enter to win a Kate Spade handbag and a $25 gift card! (SUPER jealous of that bag… I want it!)

Cup of Tea Chat | A Touch of the Random #3

I love a good chat! So join me!

As you know, I’ve been sick for the last few weeks… which leads to a lot of quiet time, staring at the ceiling.

That’s lead to quite a few random thoughts in my head… and it only seems fair that you get a peak in to my brain.

While on my death bed (aka sofa) this week, I had a lot of time to be productive… in my brain. I had zero energy to do anything, but I thought through about 30 lists, things I’d do, closets to organize. You name it, I mentally organized it. If only I was as productive in reality as I am in my sick brain.

TV was invented so that parents who are sick can keep their kiddos entertained.

I was cruising Costco.com one day and discovered an entire section of funeral supplies!  You can order an urn today, OR get expedited shipping on a casket. Even Amazon doesn’t have caskets available on Prime… except pet caskets. I can’t ever get rid of our Costco membership… their casket prices can’t be beat.

This had me thinking about weird things for sale on Amazon. Thank goodness there is a BuzzFeed article about that! It really has me interested in the coffee table book “Dancing With Cats“, which is frequently purchased with “Crafting with Cat Hair“.

I finally made it out of the house yesterday for my regular Bible Study (hi friends!). It’s such a blessing to get out friends, let our kiddos play together, and do a little studying together. I wasn’t particularly sharp yesterday, BUT just getting out of the house, yoga pants and all, was such a soul lift. Isn’t it hard making friends the older we get?

This week is a wild week for Med Students! It’s Match Week! Yesterday, med students got an email saying they either did match, or didn’t match, to a residency training spot post-graduation. It’s a terrifying time! And then Friday is figuring out where exactly you matched. It’s the craziest week ever. This was my husband and I WAY back in 2010. 6 years ago… and now he’s just a few months away from being done with training. Forever. I just can’t believe it.

Anyone else eye shadow challenged? I can NEVER apply eye shadow correctly…

Makeup issues....

How many magazines do you subscribe to? Which ones? I’m slowly letting my subscriptions go because I can’t possibly keep up. But I recently re-subscribed to Real Simple. I dropped that sub several years ago but picked up a random issue at the grocery store recently and was reminded that it’s a good magazine! My all-time fav magazine was Lucky… but it’s been killed off!

My husband recently bought a remote controlled plane to fly around. It’s probably his 5th or 6th… and I hate them all! It actually makes my heart rate increase and I get anxious. I hid in the bathroom a few days ago because he was flying it around nearby. But it’s his new hobby! Thankfully flying it outside brings him just as much joy as flying it indoors. Does your spouse have a hobby?

That’s what has been rattling around in my brain for the last few weeks!

So thoughts? Anything random you would like to share? Don’t leave me hanging!
