High Five for Friday + The $200 Sunglasses Debate

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by Katie, Caitlin, Tif and Della! If you want to know more, read about it here! Just FYI – Caitlin is having a blogging break right now, but she’ll be back next week!

Abby from Always Abby - this week's featured blogger on H54F!

This week’s featured blogger is Abby from Always, Abby!! Here’s what I love about lifestyle bloggers – there is always such variety in the posts. Some makeup, some fashion, some daily life. And Abby is no exception! She’s a new blog to me, and I’m so glad she links up here, because I’ve got someone new to read and stalk! Swing over and say hi to Abby!!

So I basically fell of the face of the earth this week! I came back from the Memorial Day holiday and basically ignored the blog. I didn’t even visit any of you!!! I am so sorry about that. It’s like going a whole week without texting a friend. I missed you all. But I’ll be back at it on the regular next week.

You may have missed it on Instagram last Friday, but I thought it would be fun to post my fav pic from the week on Friday morning, to continue the excitement of H54F. So if you want to do that too, tag your pic on Instagram with #H54Ffav so I can see it too!

Anyway, here is what I DID do this week….

1. I did quite a bit of blog brainstorming this week, and even recorded 4 (!!!) videos. I’ve got a May Favorites, 2 empty product videos, AND a brand new series kicking off in June! Pretty jazzed. YOU don’t really benefit from all of that right away, but eventually you will.

2. Memorial Day weekend was tons of fun! I hope it was great for you. We went up to my in-laws house and it was such a delightful time. I didn’t vlog at all because I didn’t want them to think I was a dork, but it was such a fun weekend. We had a quick walk in the woods….

Went to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens… it has the coolest Children’s Garden with a ton of fun exploring sections, but the best part is the splash ground! Had to drag Elizabeth away.

And then, my sister-in-law purchased a cute baby pool for Elizabeth and her cousin to splash around in. They played in it all day separately, but only together for about 10 minutes because their naps were on opposite schedules, but the squeals of delight were such fun!

3. So I didn’t do a lot of blogging this week because I was focusing on housework. I was on a roll, and didn’t want to mess with that! Know what I mean? I had a genius moment in the organizing department this week. I needed to figure out a way to organize our linen closet that is really deep. It’s so deep that it’s a pain to utilize the closet effectively. But as I was hauling an empty Costco diaper box I realized it was the perfect size for the closet! Blog post coming soon, but I was high fiving myself after that!

4. This week was a Trader Joe’s shopping week and couldn’t resist a few bunches of flowers! These are a few of my favorite things.

5. Yesterday I had to do a quick run to the mall. I snagged this striped peplum top at the Gap for only $9! Crazy! I haven’t been to the Gap in a really long time, and I miss it. But I told myself I would only keep this top if I could find 5 ways to wear it when I got home. I did – and I plan on having a post on that soon!

The real reason I went to the mall was to find my husband a new pair of sunglasses. I found him a pair of Maui Jims, which are super lightweight, and have a 2 year warranty. But they are SUPER expensive for a pair of sunglasses. It seemed ok, since my husband is the guy that uses something forever, until it breaks.

Naturally, I had to buy myself a pair. But I’m REALLY regretting it. $200 for a pair of sunglasses that I’m bound to break at some point? Ugh…. What do you think? To keep or not to keep? I love the sunglasses and they are so lightweight! But I’m the girl that buys $20 sunglasses from Nordstrom Rack… I need help!

I feel like I wrote way too much! Sorry about that. But after one week of not really chatting with you all I felt like there was a lot of blabbering to do.

Nordstrom Rack, best place to shop here in Charlotte according to my fashion daughter! Sunglasses are very cute. Loved the picture of you and your daughter.

  2. Beth says:

What a fun week you had!

I am totally jealous that it is warm enough to play in the water. Maybe we will get some of that sun shine soon!

  3. Megan says:

I have the sunglasses debate all of the time. Those glasses are nice, but I too am happy with my cheapo sunglasses. Are they polarized? Polarized does make a huge difference. That is a really cute pool and looking forward to your box tutorial.

    • Katie @ Cup of Tea says:

They are polarized and REALLY lightweight. I’m also rationalizing the purchase with the “but they have a 2 year repair/replace warranty” which helps soften the blow of them most definitely getting damaged….. but still…. $200???!!! I’m nuts.

  4. Tina says:

It seems like if I buy a pair of sunglasses that are expensive, I break them within a year. But the pair I bought with my college roommate at the dollar tree, those I still have! ALSO- that baby pool looks adorable and tons of fun!

  5. Alanna says:

I always buy cheap sunglasses. I got a $200 michael kors pair as a gift last year and the screw fell out and I lost the arm like 2 months in. So no expensive sunglasses for me.

  6. Mariah says:

Welcome back! We missed you! That peplum top is SO cute! I may need to run to gap and find one for myself…as for the sunglasses, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lost a pair or had my little sisters grab them and snap them. If it were me, I’d only keep them if I knew I could trust myself to always keep them out of reach of little hands and always keep them in the same spot! Can’t wait to see all your new videos!

  7. Abby says:

Hey, thanks so much for featuring me and for the sweet words! I’m so happy to have you as a new reader and bloggy friend. 🙂

Those flowers are so gorgeous, and I love the chalkboard vase! I typically buy my sunglasses at the dollar store, honestly, because I’m so prone to breaking them, haha! Sometimes it’s nice to splurge on luxury, though.

I hope you have the best weekend!!
    xo Always, Abby

My husband is the same way. Keeps and takes care of sunglasses, shoes, etc. forever. Generally I’m like you, but a few years ago I bought a pair of Ray Ban aviators at the airport on my way to a work trip in FL because I forgot my sunglasses at home. I’m so happy with them and haven’t had a problem with losing them or breaking them, etc.

    Have a great weekend!

  9. Ashley says:

Happy Friday, Katie! I am happy you had such a fun weekend! I own expensive sunglasses. They aren’t name brand, but they are prescription. I would say keep them if you will wear them. Sun protection is important for your eyes, too! Maybe knowing that they are costly will keep you from breaking them? Ha ha! I haven’t broken mine, yet. I think it is because I am super aware of where they are at all times! Have a great weekend!

Looks like you had a great week! I love fresh flowers. Those Trader Joe’s ones are beautiful! And $9 for a Gap shirt? Score! I don’t know if I could spend $200 for sunglasses, I would be afraid of losing or breaking them. And I am from the Northwest, so sunglasses don’t get a whole lot of use up here! They look great though. Have a great weekend!

  11. Whitney says:

Sounds like a great week!! We invested in nice sunglasses for my husband after he had vision correction surgery and they were life savers. They were Maui Jims and SO LIGHT and SO DURABLE. He’s worn them for years. I’m sure you and your hubby will do the same with yours 🙂 Can’t wait to see all your new videos

    • Katie @ Cup of Tea says:

I love these Maui Jims I bought! I hadn’t heard of them until the sales lady showed them to me. My husband, who originally scoffed at the price, was happy I bought them for us when he read glowing Amazon reviews. I know we will have these for a long time!

  12. Whitney says:

I have to weigh in on the $200 sunglasses debate. 🙂 All my life, I was the $5 sunglasses girl who had several pair in the glove box at all times. I couldn’t imagine spending $200 on anything for myself, much less an item I already had!

However…my husband convinced me to get a pair of polarized Oakleys and I will NEVER go back! They are so comfortable that I can wear them all day long without any problem. I keep them mostly in the car – I don’t let them get lost in my purse where they might be broken. Wearing cheap sunglasses now? It’s like “what’s the point?” My Oakleys are SO much better!

So yeah, keep those glasses. 🙂

    • Katie @ Cup of Tea says:

Thank you for weighing in!! I basically have now come to the same conclusion. I told myself I had to wear them over the weekend and they are just the most amazing sunglasses ever. So clear and lightweight! I’m guarding them with my life but they are amazing. 🙂
