Menu Monday | New Recipes To Try

The best Pinterest recipes that you have to try!
It’s the last Monday of the month! That means I’m teaming up with my friends Come Home for Comfort and Polka-Dotty Place to share our favorite recipes from this past month that you HAVE to try!

There are SO many recipes to try on Pinterest, that I forget to actually make them. At least this forces me to try a few recipes that get pinned.

Here’s a rundown of what I tried!

Frittata Basics // This handy little infographic showed you the basics you need to make a frittata! It was pretty handy when I wanted to put one together for a potluck. Keep the basics the same (eggs + milk + onions + salt/pepper) and just mix and match your add ins. Super handy!

Southwest Kale Power Salad // This salad was AMAZING! Even my husband loved it, despite having a sad face when he walked in the door from work to discover he was only getting a “salad”. What made this delicious was all the extra lime flavor as well as the avocado dressing. And leftovers for several days! Bonus!

Pasta with Carmelized Onions + Yogurt // I love carmelized onions! But I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to think when this pasta recipe’s sauce was just “2 cups greek yogurt + 1/4 cup pasta cooking water”. I even warned my husband that he might not like it. But nope! It ended up tasting like an alfredo sauce! It was delicious.

Mole Black Bean Tacos with Cabbage + Cilantro Slaw // MAN this was good! It was your basic black bean taco, but elevated! The flavors were simple but such a good combo. And we used leftover cabbage slaw the next day for a salad topping for extra flavor and crunch. It was a great win!

High Five for Friday #107 – Family Time!

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by me, Tif, and Della! Come, read up on what we’ve been up to this week and get to know some amazing bloggers down below!

Today’s featured blogger is Lindsay from Bourbon, Lipstick and Stilettos! She’s a Kentucky girl who loves all things product! But she also blogs about substance – like this post on what to do instead of arguing on Facebook. Swing over and say hello to Lindsay!

This was a fun week full of family fun, which meant that there wasn’t a whole lot of blogging done. (Priorities)

1. We had SUCH a fun time going to see Daniel Tiger Live! Daniel Tiger was Elizabeth’s first favorite show. She even had a Daniel Tiger 2nd Birthday party. Needless to say, she was thrilled to be there! Singing along to songs, getting excited to see her favorite characters. Such love! (also check out that crossed foot pose. HA!)

2. In my Bible Study group this year, we are reading a book called How People Change. It’s an intense study working you through something God is compelling you to change about yourself, but recognizing that change only happens through Grace. Now that we’re back from Christmas, we were supposed to arrive with our “thing to change”…. mercy! I’m stumped! Tell me I’m not the only one – my mental thinking at the moment is there is nothing to change that “God should be taking His time to change”… meaning He has so many other more important things to do. And I can just tackle it myself. Anyone else struggle with letting God just do His thing without you interfering? (HAHA I think THAT’S my thing to change!)

3. Last night we had a fun date night! We hit up Costco, because it’s way easier to go to Costco without kids. And then we went to a burger place where we had a gift card. Low key but oh so wonderful! I’m loving our priority on weekly date nights. It’s been so nice! What’s your favorite date night?

4. William is crawling! Sort of… but he’s about 70% there. I’m excited for him, but already missing his “Sit and Stay” phase. Because once babies are moving, your job gets 100% harder! HAHA!

5. Tomorrow is a super exciting day! Tomorrow is our first service in our BRAND NEW CHURCH! It’s going to be a high day! I just can’t wait. The church has been physically under construction for 2 years, but it’s been a dream for 15 years for this church. So exciting! Follow me over on IG to see little sneaky peeks 🙂

How was your week?? Can’t wait to hear all about it!

High Five for Friday #106 – From Ice to Sun

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by me, Tif, and Della! Come, read up on what we’ve been up to this week and get to know some amazing bloggers down below!

Today’s featured blogger is Colletta from Colletta’s Kitchen Sink! She loves blogging about her family and all the things that she loves! She’s also a fellow tea lover! Hooray! Be sure to swing over and say hello to Colletta!

Last week we had snow and ice… this week we hit the 60s. Welcome to North Carolina.

1. I tried to be the fun mom this week and spend a ton of time outside! We had a spontaneous picnic in the backyard on Wednesday, and then 2 playground play dates. It’s just so funny that last week we were iced in all week, and now we’re out enjoying the sunshine!

2. It was a good week for food again! I made a few new dishes, including this Southwestern Kale Power Salad. It made leftovers for days and it was SO satisfying!!

3. We are just a few weeks away from moving in to our brand new church! This has been over a year in the making (good ol’ Chapel Hill, NC) and it’s going to be so great not being a renter. I’ve sneakily scheduled myself to do a few of the first day’s things – like giving the kids story during the service. HA! I couldn’t resist being the first one.

4. My husband, after 6 months of being in his new office, still hasn’t really decorated it. So he requested some original Elizabeth art, and she happily complied! I happened to have some small canvases that I bought on super sale, so she painted away.

5. As you read this, I’m happily watching the live coverage of the inauguration today. Whatever your political feelings, I can’t help but get excited about pomp and circumstance. There is SUCH tradition around this day. What the outgoing president does, what the incoming president does… the fact that ALL living presidents come as well. It’s just all so cool!

How was your week?? Can’t wait to hear all about it!

Blogging Rules I Broke in 2016 (And I’m Ok With!)

There are a lot of unspoken blog rules that are just fine to break!

Ah blogging – there is this whole network of fun, community and content. There is SO much variety out there and love getting a chance to share my opinions.

There are unspoken “rules” that, as a blogger, you feel pressured to keep up with on a regular basis. If you aren’t sticking to these “rules” you might feel like a failing blogger.

Well, I’m here to tell you that I’m proud to break these rules. Not even sorry.

1. You must be active on every social media platform // I’m looking at you, Twitter. I figured out in 2016 that I just don’t have the bandwith to even try to be active on all the various platforms. It just wasn’t realistic. So I chose to focus my time on my favorites (Facebook, Instagram and YouTube) and just casually cruise/use the others.

Biggest example is Pinterest! I love Pinterest for personal use! So I just continue to use it that way. I like to pin fellow blogger friends’ content, and occasionally pin my own. But for the most part, it’s personal. And I’m ok with that!

2. Successful bloggers make money //  True, making money would be just fine! I wouldn’t turn down a chance to receive something for free or make a little extra cash! BUT don’t let that desire to make money sacrifice your value as a blogger. If you become known as the person that always talks about sponsored products, no one will listen if you truly love something! Stick to talking about brands and products you truly love and would spend your own money on. And it’s a bonus if you get some cash for it! And if you’re not making a dime from blogging (like me) that’s totally fine!! You can still be a successful blogger without making money.

3. Blogging daily is essential // I do believe that consistently posting is crucial to have consistent readers and followers. People will stop visiting your blog if you aren’t posting (*cough cough* me in 2016 *cough cough*). BUT you shouldn’t feel pressured to post daily or even every week day. You may experience burn out and then swing the other direction (like me). This year I was ok with posting a few times a week, and keeping up on Facebook and Instagram. I was content with not daily posting. And you should be too!

4. Content about your personal life is kind of boring // I see bloggers apologizing for doing a post about life lately, or just a “chatty blog” or video… but who cares! It’s your blog – blog about what you want to talk about. I love sharing what we’re up to around here. True, you don’t get a lot of new visitors clicking through to posts on “what we did this weekend”, but your regular readers who like you for you want to hear about it!

5. Track those numbers and compare yourself to other bloggers // Like #4, I care more about keeping up with regular, return readers than trying to hit a viral post and sky rocket my numbers. If I only have 10 people who regularly read and comment on my blog, that works for me! Don’t get stuck looking at someone else’s blog or social media account and being frustrated that you seem “small”. What’s important is the community you’re building in your slice of the internet. You want people to stick around because of you and your voice!

What do you think? Agree or disagree?

There is ONE blogging rule I broke a lot in 2016 that I’m not ok with. And if you’re a new blogger, learn from my mistake.

I fell behind on visiting and commenting on other blogs.

This is a TOP PRIORITY blog rule you must always follow. The best thing about blogging and the blogging community is just that – community. If you don’t visit fellow bloggers, see what they’re up to, comment and share, then what’s the point? Friendships and collaborations get built on community with fellow bloggers. I shouldn’t have neglected this. And I need to get better in 2017.

What “rules” have you broken? Anything you want to improve on?

Create Your Perfect Morning Routine

You can create the perfect morning routine for YOU in just 5 steps!

You see morning routine pins all over Pinterest! The general opinion out there is if you don’t have a morning routine, you’re loosing the day before it even begins.

Here’s the truth – a morning routine is GREAT! If it’s one that works for you. Should you wake up at the crack of dawn to accomplish everything? Does it really matter if your bed is made?

Maybe. Depends on you!

I am a firm believer that we are all wired differently, and what works for me may not work for you. We shouldn’t be comparing ourselves to one another, because that’s just not fair.

So why a morning routine?

A morning routine, whatever it is, can help you start the day on the right foot. It can signal to your body that the day has begun, and it’s time to get stuff done.

Does it have to start at 5:00 am? Nope.

If you’re wanting to create your own morning routine, I have 5 things you should consider:

  1. Think of things that you KNOW you’re better off doing in the morning.
  2. It’s OK if you are not a morning person.
  3. Tackle a few chores.
  4. Get dressed and ready for your day.
  5. Find time for some quiet.

If you take some time to think about you and how you are naturally wired, you can create a morning routine that works perfectly for you!

So what’s my typical morning?

The goal is to have my morning routine complete before 9:00am. Some mornings it’s a tight squeeze. But generally speaking we need to be out the door, doing something (school run, groceries, errands, etc) by 9:00.

My typical morning routine is:

5am | Up, catch up on computer work and enjoy the quiet

6am | To the gym

7am | Family breakfast, get everyone dressed

7:30am | Unload dishwasher, start load of laundry

8am | Get dressed, makeup, make beds

8:30am | Enjoy a little quiet or play time with kiddos before needing to rush out the door (and try not to actually rush, because that makes my kids go slower…. ugh)

9am | Hopefully out the door

Do you have a morning routine? Are you more of a morning person? Or a night owl?
