High Five for Friday #102 – Only 2 More Sleeps!

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by me, Tif, and Della! Come, read up on what we’ve been up to this week and get to know some amazing bloggers down below!

Today’s featured blogger is Audrey from Five Foot Nothing Shopping! She’s a fashion blogger with a love of plaid, pattern mixing and sharing how to best dress when you are petite. If you haven’t had a chance to check out her blog, do it now!

Can you believe there are only 2 more nights until Christmas??? I’m SO excited! We’ve been having too much fun getting ready for Christma that we are picture-less today. I think that’s always the sign of a great week! Anyway, here’s what we’ve been up to!

1. My blog randomly has been having problems the last few weeks… you may have noticed?? (HAHA!) Comments weren’t working, layout was wonky… last Friday I was trying to fix something and my entire website crashed. Ugh! It was horrible! I think I figured out the source (a bad plugin) and everything is working again, thank goodness. Things will still be pretty quiet around here until the new year, but you can keep up with me over on IG!

2. The plague has finally left our home. The only clinger on is William, although he’s about 80% better. He had a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday and he had a teeny tiny ear infection, but other than that he seems to be much better. The doctor prescribed antibiotics for his ear, and the minute I cracked open that bottle, a flood of childhood memories came back. That bright pink stuff that sort of tastes like bubble gum cherry chalk… I remember it well.

3. Thankfully there was not a lot of errand running this week. The last of my gift buying arrived from Amazon. Groceries were purchased on Monday morning. So other than a quick, random trip to Costco (it was a zoo!) and our doctor run, we’ve been home. I’m proud to say I didn’t set foot in any stores for Christmas shopping. I normally like to swing in to the local small shops for presents but this year I just didn’t have it in me. Amazon all the way!

4. Elizabeth is all about this Christmas thing! She loves our tree. She faithfully sings “Jingle Bells” over and over. She was thrilled when I had her help me make cookies! We went to see Santa yesterday, and she was just in awe. This year it is truly magical for her, and I love that. While I was wrapping presents last night, I saw the huge pile for her and I cannot wait to watch her open them!

2 more nights….. 2 more nights……

5. William is a hoot! This week I plopped him on the floor on his tummy and put a toy in front of him while I helped Elizabeth with a craft. Next thing I know, he’s shimmied over to that toy! Wondering how he accomplished that, I reset. Turns out that little bugger is crawling! It’s not a pretty crawl, but crawling anyway! He’s crawling BEFORE he’s sitting up completely. HA! Elizabeth’s first crawl was a proper crawl. She didn’t mess around with scooching, launching or even really rolling around. She just decided one day to just do it, and do it right. So it’s just a hoot to now get to watch the “Evolution of Crawling” with William! There is video! I might just pop it up over on IG today so you can all enjoy his graceful worm-like movements 🙂

How was your week? Can’t wait to hear about it!

High Five for Friday #101 – The Plague

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by me, Tif, and Della! Come, read up on what we’ve been up to this week and get to know some amazing bloggers down below!

Today’s featured blogger is Jess from Just Jess! She’s a fellow NC blogger who loves blogging about her fun adventures! You’ll also catch posts about books AND bargain hunting! Win! Swing over and say hello!

Here’s what we were up to! (Although you may want to stop reading here so you don’t catch our germs)

1. The plague hit our house this week. Elizabeth declared that she was “too sick to go to church” on Saturday, which is NOT like her! She didn’t go to school on Monday… and then William was afflicted starting Tuesday. Ugh. Lots of tissues and coughing going on here. I think Elizabeth is almost through it. But William is still coughing. Send Christmas cheer and tissues!

2. We had a fun work Christmas party Wednesday night! It was tons of fun to chat with the folks my husband works with and meet spouses. It was one of those places where the noise level is so high, so you’re shouting the whole night. By Thursday morning I sounded like a gravely-voiced old hag… But it was fun!

3. Some of you may have seen this on IG Stories yesterday, but Thursday morning I came downstairs and saw this car parked right in front of our driveway! I couldn’t tell if there was anyone parked in it. Eventually we had to call the police to come and figure it out. My husband went outside to talk with the officer and asses what to do. He said that after a few minutes, from the top of the hill, someone was booking it down the hill! He was dodging the cars parked, various vehicles driving… apparently it was a hoot! But apparently it’s cool to park and block someone’s driveway, because the car’s owner drove it away after a scolding from the policeman. It was a fun way to start our Thursday!

4. This week I had Elizabeth choose a DIY gift idea for our family. She chose salt dough ornaments! It was a multi-day process, but we had a fun time mixing it up and painting them. That girl loves her some crafts!

5. William still isn’t sitting up 100% of the time, but he’s able to sit up by himself for about 20 seconds or so, until he tries to turn to see something and he tips over. It’s like Baby Tipping! But he is very proud of himself when he does sit up!! It’s so cute!

How was your week? Can’t wait to hear about it!

The QUICK Gift Guide for Preschoolers

Confession – I am a HUGE gift buying procrastinator! Doesn’t matter who it’s for, I am usually scrambling last-minute to find you a gift. (Sorry!) As a result, I rely heavily on Amazon Prime and subscription-style gifts.

I’ve rounded up a collection of get-it-quick gifts for the toddler or preschooler in your life! With all of these gifts, we either own them right now or they are currently in my cart right now to buy for our preschooler. And if you need a gift in a hurry, these will be fun and get the job done!

Ben the Rooster | This is SO CUTE! It’s a pen pal subscription service for your kiddos. Ben the Rooster sends them 2 postcards a month all about what’s going on at the farm. Each note includes a postcard, with stamp, for your child to send BACK to Ben! Elizabeth gets so excited when she sees a card with “Ben the Woooster” on it. Use the coupon code BEN10 right now and you can get 10% off your order!

Journey by Aaron Becker | This picture-only story is amazing! It’s a tale of a girl who finds a magic red crayon and draws a door to a magical land. It’s quite the adventure story, and Elizabeth loves that she can tell it to us. There are also 2 other books in this series!

Interlocking Toy Snowflakes | We have a similar toy and it gets so much use! The adults even get into building all sorts of shapes. A bonus for this toy is that you can fill a ziplock back and take some to go with you.

PlanToys Beehive | This little wooden toy has so many uses! Obviously there’s that fancy “fine motor” skill development. But you can also build different towers with those little hives. Or play a game of hide-and-seek with the bees to get them back to their hives. You can match/identify colors. It’s a fun one in our house! And those little bees are just so cute.

Hape Visit the Vet Magnetic Travel Book |  Anything magnetic is fun at our house. And if it has a little scene with it? Bonus! This has been in Elizabeth’s wishlist for quite a while. It would be perfect for taking to a restaurant or to church.

PlanToys Balancing Tree | This puzzle is just as much fun for mom as it is kids! I have definitely played around with this one a ton since we got it. Plus it looks really nice on a shelf!

The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game | This is the first “board” game that Elizabeth has had, and she took to it really quick! We love playing this as a family. And it’s a simple enough game for even toddlers to understand.

Marble Genius Marble Run Set | There are several sizes of this set (we have the “deluxe” one) but this is just SO much fun! I’ve caught my own husband, alone, in the playroom, setting up an elaborate marble run.

Learning Resources Primary Science Viewscope | We have a little scientist on our hands. This looks like it would be tons of fun when we finish collecting bugs or rocks outside. It is sitting in my shopping cart right now for Christmas!

If you’ve got a preschooler to shop for, then one of these gifts will absolutely fit the bill!

How to Hack a Basic Planner

Planners can play such a big role in getting yourself organized. And fancy “bells-and-whistle” planners are popping up all over the place. You need a planner? There is one for you out there! But do you really need the fancy planner? Can you get by with a simple, basic planner?

basic planner hack

I love my Simplified Planner! It’s been the first pre-done planner I’ve stuck with longer than a few months. But I also spent about 2 years creating and tweaking my own planner, so I know what features are important for me.

I went out and bought 2 inexpensive planners, both under $10, and did a few customizing hacks to get the features of the fancy planners I love, without the fancy planner price. The first is a Day Designer that I found at Target. There are SO many different layout options to choose from you’re bound to find something that works for you. The second is from Blue Sky, purchased on Amazon. This is as bare bones as you can get, but it gets the job done.

Since there is such variety out there in planner land, there is bound to be a planner just for you. If you are drooling over an Erin Condren, or a Kate Spade, or a Passion Planner, but have limited funds, then don’t worry! I am sharing my favorite hacks to make a basic planner function like a fancy planner, without extra money.

hack a planner

Color Code | This may seem like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised how often I forget this tip. Color coding is especially helpful when you’re looking at a whole month. Use blue for appointments. Highlight special events, like holidays or birthdays. Use pencil to map out your blog posts (because they can change). When you’re scanning your whole month, all at once, important things can easily get lost. Color coding means you won’t overlook that important appointment when you begin mapping out your week.

Weekly To Do List | I have yet to find a decent planner, expensive or inexpensive, that offers sufficient space for a long to do list. This is how my brain operates. I like to have a running list of to dos for the week, and choose each day what needs to get tackled on that list. When I find that I need more space, I grab extra large, unlined sticky notes. They easily hold a lengthy list, and can stick right on my weekly page layout. They are also cheap… so I don’t feel bad starting a fresh list later in the week.

Decoration | I’m not a huge decorator. But for some that’s a big bonus of a planner – those adorable stickers and washi tape! Who says you can’t do that with a basic planner? Use washi tape to outline special days. Pick up stencils to highlight important stuff. Why not?

Customize Your Layout | Did that planner come with a spot meant for evening appointments, but you rarely do anything past 5pm? Then use it as a spot to jot down your meals. Or how much water you drank. Or even a quick list of must dos for the day. One of my favorite ways to customize a layout is to split a day spot in half. I use the left side for appointments, the right for a to do list. Just play around with it!

hack a planner

Margins! Margins! Margins! | Planners have a TON of white space around the layouts. Don’t let that go to waste! I often use the tops of each day to write my cleaning tasks for the day. I use the spaces at the bottom of weekly page layouts for blog posts and that night’s meal. Use the margins on your monthly page view for bigger goals for the month! Or jot down a favorite quote. Or decorate like crazy. Don’t let that white space go to waste.

Note Taking | Why can’t every planner come with a large section of lined, blank pages for note taking? I love lists, mind mapping, and brain storming. I was pleasantly surprised that the floral Day Designer planner had a great section, but most do not. When you crave note taking space, pick up an inexpensive notebook (my favorite is the Moleskine Volant) to serve as your brain dumping spot. If it’s the same size as your planner, you can easily tuck the notebook inside your planner.

Do you have any ways that you customize your planner? Do you even use a planner? I’d love to hear from you!
