William’s 1 Month Update!

An update on what William is up to at One Month!

It’s a few weeks late, but I wanted to share how William is doing now that he’s a month old! I did this regularly once Elizabeth was 6 months old, and I kind of wish I started earlier! I would be referring to it right now.

So here is how life has been with William this past month!

An update on what William is up to at One Month!

Height/Weight: As of last week, he’s 9 lbs 5 oz and 21″.  Basically, he’s gained 2 lbs and grew an inch since being born.

Routine: After we got over the initial guideline of feeding every 2-3 hours, we’ve been following a schedule. Elizabeth is a pretty scheduled kid so it helped get William into one as well.  FYI – I’ve been loosely following Moms On Call’s schedule app, the same one I used with Elizabeth. It’s a helpful guide, making sure your little one eats more during the day than at night (in theory)….

As of yesterday, here’s his current routine.

  • 6:00-6:30am – Wake up and bottle, and then awake
  • 8:30am – Bottle, then nap
  • 11:30am – Bottle
  • 12:30pm – Nap
  • 2:30pm – Bottle then a mix of awake and dozing
  • 5:00pm – Bottle, then crabby for a while!
  • 8:00pm – Bottle and then bed
  • 2:30am – Wake up and bottle, then right back to sleep (in theory)

Sleeping: William is sleeping… ok…. night time is actually better than day time. And if we had to excel at one, I’ll take the night time! In general he’s been gradually sleeping longer and longer at night. The day time naps are sort of hit and miss, which may just be the nature of trying to just keep up with a toddler’s schedule and activities. He’s been doing a lot of napping on the go.

This has definitely been the HARDEST part to adjust to as parents to two kids. We were so used to our full night of sleep, so having to go backwards has been hard. But each night seems a little easier and I’m not nodding off as much.

Eating:  Breast feeding didn’t go all that well this time… I don’t naturally love breast feeding, but was really excited to give it a try this time! (Elizabeth stopped breast feeding and went to pumped milk at 1 month) At about the 2 week mark we switched to exclusively using formula. I’m totally ok with that – zero Mommy guilt! William is consistently eating 3-4 oz each time. I’m convinced, though, that he’d just keep eating whatever you want to give him. Then he’ll just spit it all up later.

He is a HUGE spitter! We’re talking projectile, stay at least 3 feet away spitting. We are still trying to figure out if it’s because of reflux, overeating, gas or the dreaded Pyloric Stenosis. Even though he was never diagnosed, it’s rumored my husband has it, and was a horrific vomiter. Fingers crossed it’s NOT that. But I feel like I’m testing a new spitting theory every week.

Sizes: In about another week I’m going to have to haul out the 3-6 month sized clothes! William is skinny, like his sister, but he’s long torso-ed, so all those onesies are starting to look snug. Elizabeth was long legged… this kid is long tummied. (Is that a word?)

Milestones: It’s hard to remember all the happy moments from the last month or so… thanks sleep deprivation.

  • Had to have multiple weight checks the first few days of life, but quickly gained back to his birth weight!
  • Sleeping well in his crib, but really doesn’t like to be swaddled.
  • Unlike his sister, he’d prefer, though, to be held forever.
  • He started grinning right at the one month mark!
  • And we are slowly sleeping longer and longer at night. Hooray!

The book is a good read too (basics in list form) but the schedule app just makes you feel like you have your head screwed on straight especially in the early days.

I agree… we were all sleeping all night and had gotten used to that set up so it’s been super hard to go back to up off and on all night with a toddler who’s bright eyed and bushy tailed first thing in the morning. Gone are the days of sleep when the baby sleeps 🙂 Good thing the little guys are so cute. Hope you get things figured out with William’s eating/spitting up. We’re doing some reflux testing at our house this week. It’s hard when these babies are having issues. Take care!!

He is so cute! I definitely see the family resemblance. Bless your heart, I can’t imagine functioning without a ful night’s sleep…much less having to keep 2 children alive and happy! 🙂

It’s amazing how similar and dissimilar siblings can be! Hope you get more and more sleep as time goes by. Mothers definitely need superhero-like skills to deal with everything!
