And today, it’s all about Food!  After you read this, don’t forget to head over to All Things Big and Small to check out Annie’s best tips!

Organize Your Life series with Cup of Tea and All Things Big & Small!

Oh so many tips to share around grocery shopping and meal planning! If this is your first time here at Cup of Tea, then I share almost every Monday my weekly dinner menu plan. Confession – I hate meal planning. But I’ve learned over the years that doing a weekly menu plan for dinner saves us money AND saves me the headache of figuring out what to cook. I may hate doing it, but it really does save me in the long run.

Whether you’re just deciding to dabble in the world of menu planning, or if you’ve been menu planning for years, here are my favorite tips to make this tedious task a little easier!

Keep track of your family favorites | It makes it easy to fill a menu for the week if you have a go to place where all your favorites are listed. I have a few places. I have a recipe box full of favorite go-to meals. I also have a private Pinterest board where I save all the best pins that were big time favs. Not to mention a few favorite cookbooks that I refer to. One other fabulous idea comes from my friend Whitney at Come Home for Comfort! She keeps a handwritten list of her favorite dinners & sides. That makes it really easy to reference!

Have a set menu (kind of) | Taco Tuesday? Friday Night Pizza? Sunday Soup Night? Try incorporating a theme for a few days a week to help guide your menu planning. It doesn’t have to be the same meal every week, but having a theme gives you direction for finding a new recipe! For us, Friday nights are always soup and salad in the winter. Saturdays are leftovers. That’s 2 of 7 days planned right there. We also have at least one Mexican meal a week and one Italian meal a week.

Utilize a printable | There are a million beautiful printables online at your disposal. I have my favorite, but I have a post that features a few more. Displaying your menu on a printable each week gives your family a hub to see “what’s for dinner”.  I also make sure I jot down whether that dinner is from a cookbook (page number too!) or from Pinterest. My favorite printable also features a grocery shopping list section. I fill that in! And then, because I enjoy rewritting lists, I rewrite my shopping list on a cheap notepad to take with me to the store. And if you’re wondering why I do that… hold tight!

Reuse your menus | So all those menus I write on the printables? I save those! I label them “Fall/Winter” or “Spring/Summer” and then file them away. And because I wrote the complete grocery shopping list on the printable, I can use that to reference when I make a new shopping list weeks later. (Seriously, this was a GAME changer for me!)

Enough menu planning tips for you? How about a grocery shopping tip or two?

I’m the first to admit that I’m not a couponer, sale shopper, or super deal scouter-outer. It’s just not my thing. I stock up on regularly-used items, like canned beans, when they’re on sale, but other than that, that’s my extent of saving. But I do have a few tips that make grocery shopping quick and easy!

Organize your shopping list by section/aisle | This saves you a ton of time when you’re in the store. Not to mention it helps you not overlook something on your list! I’ve done that SO many times, and it’s annoying to be zig-zagging all over the grocery store.

Meal prep what you can | I’m not the best at this, but I do try to prep food where I can post-grocery trip. One thing I’ve learned is my family will eat more veggies and fruit if I pre-wash and slice them when I get home from the store. My toddler consumes raw bell peppers and cucumbers at an alarming rate! I’m more likely to toss them on her dinner plate if I’ve already sliced them all up ahead of time. Another prep I do? When I buy a bundle of cilantro or parsley, I pluck off leaves and lay them on a paper towel to dry, then slip them in a storage bag. They last SO much longer that way!

So that’s it! I have SO many tips running around in my head that we could easily make a menu planning post again next week.

Don’t forget to head over to Annie and see what ideas she has! So many good ones over there.

Stay tuned each Tuesday for the month of February for our favorite tips! Here’s what you can look forward to!

Trying Out Blue Apron | A Review

For the last few weeks we’ve been utilizing a fun Christmas gift we received! We got 2 weeks worth of vegetarian meals from Blue Apron, and it was tons of fun! I knew the minute the shipment arrived to our door that I had to do a review for you.

The Blue Apron meal service gets so much buzz! Here's a review of a 2 week, all vegetarian experience.

What is Blue Apron?

Blue Apron is a meal delivery company that sends right to your door yummy, fresh ingredients for fun new recipes to try. When you sign up, you have the ability to select what types of meals you do/do not want to receive. For us, we received only vegetarian meals, but you could even select “no red meat” if you want to get more specific!

You have the option of choosing meals for 2 or a family of 4. For our family of 2 adults + 1 toddler, the 2 person meals were the perfect serving size!

For more pricing and menu examples, check out the Blue Apron site!

What did we receive?

We got all three meal ingredients and recipes delivered in a large box on one day. The box was TONS of fun to open. All the fresh ingredients – veggies, sauces, cheeses, etc – were all packaged up and labeled well. I just tucked everything in one spot in my refrigerator so I could easily find it on cooking day!

Included in the box were 3 printed recipe cards. Each recipe had pictures (step-by-step and finished product) and instructions for prep.

What was it like to cook a meal?

To start – we received only vegetarian meals. So take that into account!

All the ingredients are fresh, but require preparation. This makes sense – if you ship prepared/washed veggies and herbs, they’ll be spoiled in days. This way you don’t have as much pressure to cook the meals ASAP! But you do need to take into account the chopping, roasting and prepping when you’re planning when to cook dinner.

You’ll also feel compelled to prep everything and put them in their own clear bowls, just like the pictures in the recipe. You will fill up your dishwasher faster that way, but it’s oh so satisfying.

The Blue Apron meal service gets so much buzz! Here's a review of a 2 week, all vegetarian experience.

The recipes are easy to follow and the instructions are clear. There is an assumption of a modest level of cooking knowledge. If you’re a true novice (unsure how to chop an onion), you may feel a little lost. But hey! Half the fun of this service is learning new skills and/or cooking new things!

One funny story of me cooking these meals! Our first meal was a roasted cauliflower and yellow curry. That’s a recipe right up our alley! The instructions at each step said “season with salt”. So I added a pinch each time. Nothing extravagant. By the end the meal was SO salty with the extra salt it just wasn’t edible! Oops! Rookie mistake – taste before the seasoning is added. HA!

To give you an idea of the menu, the meals we were sent were:

Cacciatore-style Baked Eggs with Lacinato Kale & Parmesan-Garlic Toasts

Apple & Blue Cheese Panzanella Salad with Smashed Purple Potatoes (one of our favorites!)

Butternut Squash & Poblano Chili with Toasted Pepitas & Charred Lime (yum!)

Three Cheese Calzones with Kale & Tomato Sauce

Curried Cauliflower Steaks with Black Rice & Thai Basil

Winter Squash & Baby Kale Quesadillas with Queso Oaxaca & Sunny Side-Up Eggs

Each dish wasn’t hard to make and took about 30 minutes to make, which is perfectly acceptable for a weeknight dinner!

And we loved how pretty each meal looked! Made me look like a real professional!

The Blue Apron meal service gets so much buzz! Here's a review of a 2 week, all vegetarian experience.

Who should TRY Blue Apron?

1. If you’re trying to eat healthy, but you are lacking time/energy to shop and find recipes for healthy meals, this is for you! One of the hardest things about trying to incorporate healthy eating into your week is just figuring out healthy recipes. Not to mention portion control. This service ticks both of those boxes. And if you’re struggling finding time to shop, this kills two birds with one stone.

2. If you find yourself lacking inspiration for the “What are we going to eat this week?” question, this is fun! You get sent three new recipes – recipes that you could replicate again. And you might even get a chance to try out a new ingredient or two that you haven’t tried before.

2. This would be a FUN date night gift for a couple that loves to cook. Nothing more adventurous and fun than having three new recipes to try out together in the kitchen.

Would I try Blue Apron again?

Short answer – No.

Long answer? It was such fun trying out new recipes! It was a fun gift idea, too. But would I pay for it myself? No. The point, in my mind, of a meal service is to save you time on the cooking part. And it was a bit of a bummer to still have to cook the meals, even though there was time saved in the meal planning and shopping. (#lazy)

You may remember me gushing about a place here in town where I can pick up 5 already-made dinners, plus salad AND dessert, for $100 (just heat and serve!). It’s just too convenient! So if I want a fun meal shake up, I’m using that service.

The food was yummy and different than our usual rotation! But if my goal is to give myself a break cooking dinner, this doesn’t fit the bill.

What about you? Have you tried Blue Apron yet? Tried anything else similar? Let me know!

For the record – we received our Blue Apron subscription as a Christmas gift from family, NOT from Blue Apron directly! Blue Apron in no way sponsored or paid for this review. All opinions are my own!

High Five for Friday #55 | On the Other Side of Snow

H54F - A weekly link up, hosted by Cup of Tea, Bright on a Budget, Coffee with Caitlin & Della Devoted

Welcome to High Five for Friday – hosted by me, TifDella, and Caitlin! If you want to know more, read about it here!

Did you notice? H54F is now going live at 8AM EST! That’s one extra hour to edit, finish up (or just write – which is totally fine!). Hope it didn’t cause too much confusion this morning.

This week’s featured blogger is Taylor from Tattooed Teacher in Texas! She’s been linking up with H54F for a long time! Back when H54F was hosted by The Lauren Elizabeth (over a year ago!!), I remember regularly seeing Taylor’s blog listed right near mine on the link up list, and it was SUCH fun swinging over to see what she was up to. She blogs regularly about her teaching adventures (including tips for you fellow teachers!), the fun she has in Texas, and she’s a huge planner fan! Check out this week’s plan with me post with her Erin Condren planner!

So, how was your week?

1. Who survived the epic snow storm? Here in our part of NC we got a few inches of snow topped with a few inches of ice. Our poor driveway was an ice rink until Wednesday! We had a touch of cabin fever around here by Sunday. And I’ll admit I shed a few tears on Monday night when I got a text that Elizabeth’s little school morning would be canceled on Tuesday because……… the parking lot wasn’t cleared!!! GAH! I was willing to sled her in to school if I had to! But we survived with lots of snow fun!

2.  I am having SUCH a hard time shaking off this tired mode in the afternoons! I’m blaming it on being pregnant and I need a nap… but still. I have such high expectations for productive nap times, but when Elizabeth goes down for her nap, a cup of tea and an episode of Fixer Upper is calling my name instead.

This mommy is so tired....

3. Because of the cabin fever earlier in the week, Elizabeth and I just HAD to go to TJ Maxx. You know how it is. I feel like TJ Maxx’s home decor section just gets me. Anyway, as we were cruising, I came across the SWEETEST bunny mugs and a little tray. I love them so much that I am resisting the urge to see if there are matching dinner and/or dessert plates. But I did see that Pier One has some adorable Easter bunny plate settings! Hold me back, friends. Hold me back! (And now I’m officially my mother… gushing about plates….)

4. I’m REALLY excited for a new series starting next week!!! If you’re an organization fan, you’re not going to want to miss next month’s series. Stay tuned!

5. Thanks to Elizabeth’s school being canceled on Tuesday, it really messed up my filming day! So stay tuned (notice a theme??) next week for a haul and first impressions video from my post-Christmas Sephora and Ulta shopping trip! But did you see what DID make it on the blog this week?

Nail Polish Capsule Collection

A streamlined nail polish capsule collection for everyday nailsLast year was my year to hoard/overbuy nail polish! So with the start of the new year, I was itching to pair it all down to the few shades that I actually wear on my nails. I love the idea of a Capsule Wardrobe, so why not a nail polish capsule collection too?

Nail polish for me serves two purposes. First, it’s obviously a great accessory! But second, and more importantly, it slows me down from biting my nails. I’ve been a nail biter since I was a girl, and nail polish keeps me from biting them for at least a day. So it’s actually REALLY important!

Here are the 7 shades I chose to keep and are on heavy rotation on my nails.

A streamlined nail polish capsule collection for everyday nails featuring Essie's LadylikeEssie in Ladylike | I mentioned this shade as my favorite nail polish from 2015! It’s that perfect greige with a hint of purple. When it’s painted on the nail it is definitely more neutral/office appropriate than the bottle lets on.

A streamlined nail polish capsule collection for everyday nails featuring Essie's MademoiselleEssie in Mademoiselle | This is THE classic sheer nude! When I need some polish but I’m over color on my nails, this is my go to. It’s just a little more polished than bare nails.

A streamlined nail polish capsule collection for everyday nails featuring Essie's In stitchesEssie in In Stitches | This one is a red tone that’s darker than your average neutral, BUT still absolutely great for every day! When I’m in the mood for some red but not RED, this is my shade.

A streamlined nail polish capsule collection for everyday nails featuring Essie's ChinchillyEssie in Chinchilly | Who doesn’t have Chinchilly? This color cracks me up! Sometimes it’s gray, sometimes it’s purple. When I first paint it on it looks more purple, but then as it dries it’s a lighter gray. It just doesn’t know who it wants to be.

A streamlined nail polish capsule collection for everyday nails featuring Essie's Double Breasted JacketEssie in Double Breasted Jacket | This is my RED shade! Of all the colors it’s not used as much, but it’s such a pretty red for my skin tone that it’s a must have.

A streamlined nail polish capsule collection for everyday nails featuring Essie's Island HoppingEssie in Island Hopping | This is the more purple toned version of In Stitches. If Ladylike is your thing, and you’re wanting something a little darker, might I suggest this one?

A streamlined nail polish capsule collection for everyday nails featuring Sally Hansen's Gray-t EscapeSally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Gray-t Escape (similar) | Even though the name has “gray” in it, it doesn’t come across as gray on my nails. It’s more of a pale, pale Chinchilly. It’s really pretty!

What are some of your go to nail polish colors? Have you paired down your collection recently?
Let me know!

The World’s Best Seven Layer Bean Dip from Pretty Providence

This is perfect for your upcoming Super Bowl Party! We’ve eaten this twice in 2 weeks and it’s delicious. Easy to throw together for a fun dinner or perfect to haul to a potluck with friends. You can add to the veggie toppings for the top to suit your tastes. I made this over the weekend and added sliced spinach and cilantro.

Recipe Round Up - Corn Chowder

Sweet Corn Chowder from Maebells

I’ve made this several times so far, but it was definitely a must make this weekend with the huge snowstorm. My husband isn’t a soup guy but this one is something he loves to eat! If that’s not an endorsement, I don’t know what is!

Don’t those all look yummy?
